Riesling, Germany’s white star
With over 23,000 ha of vineyard planting (35% of total vineyard area), Germany has close to half of the word’s planting of Riesling in terms of area. The regions Pfalz and Mosel alone has more planting of Riesling than the US, the second country with the most Riesling grown. No wonder Riesling is Germany’s white star. Riesling is cold-hardy and is best suitable for cool climate regions. It is one of the few grape varieties that can express terroir really well. Therefore depending on the places it is grown, Riesling can be floral, fruity, spicy or mineral. The common characteristics are crisp acidity, relatively low alcohol and longevity. It is true that some German Riesling has a certain sweetness level. However, because of climate change, terroir expression, improved vinification, as well as consumers’ preference, nowadays close to 50% of all quality wines produced is dry, while 21% is off dry. Consumers may sometimes find the classifications Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese in the Quality Wine category (QmP) confusing. Actually, these terms only regulate the must weights, or sugar concentration when grapes are picked, not the residual sugar after fermentation. Wines with these terms can also be dry (trocken). If in doubt, check the alcohol level. The higher it is, the drier the wine is. Hong Kong importers are also aware of the trend and are, albeit slowly, stocking more dry Riesling. Check them out at the annual Riesling Weeks kick off tasting on 2nd June organised by Wines of Germany. Explore the many expressions of Riesling from steely in Nahe and floral in Mose to luscious in Rheinhessen to bold in Pfalz.
