South African Wine, a journey of discovery
With over 350 years of winemaking experience, South Africa can rightfully claim the Old ‘New World’ title. Winemakers, while respecting the traditional winemaking methods, are also not afraid of exploring new techniques to make wine that is expressive of terroir. Nevertheless, the country has more sunshine than most Old World wine regions so the fruit will always be riper but the wine always tend to be earthier and drier, more akin to the Old World style rather than the overtly ripe fruit character of the New World. South African wine is currently the ‘hot’ category in international wine scene with acclaimed critics and journalists such as Tim Atkin and Neil Martin describing South African wine being exciting and dynamic. The market share of South African wine in Hong Kong is still relatively small but we are seeing more importers bringing them in. The new arrivals are Perdeberg and Saxenburg, which will be shown at the South African Wine Festival. Let’s explore the diversity of South African wine in April together!
